We will be going to visit the vernal pool tomorrow afternoon. Warm clothes and boots will be important. This is our first visit to the vernal pool. We are very excited! Today we did experiments with sow bugs. Ask you child to tell you about his/her experiment. You can also read all about our science work in the Thursday Newsletter from Green Meadow. It is our turn to write an entry. Friday is an early Release!

We had our publishing party yesterday. Writers read their pieces to each other and then celebrated by going outside and blowing bubbles. The published pieces are on display in the hallway for all to enjoy. The remainder of the drafts will be sent home next week. During writing workshop this week the children are writing pieces of their own choosing. Some have decided to write seasonal stories, others are writing a story from a genre they enjoy reading, such as fairy tales or mysteries. Our next unit "small moments" will begin next week.

On Monday we were very excited to meet Erika, the scientist from Habitat, who will be working with us all year. She will work with all second grade classes during the year to develop our skills as scientists. First we played a guessing game to help us become better observers. Then we practiced using a flow chart to identify different kinds of leaves. Erika brought in a real Great Horned Owl that was once alive. We discussed the various adaptations the owl has developed to live in its habitat. Erika also encouraged us to explore the woods behind the school with our families. She will be back next month to work with us again.
